  • Griffin Henry Belk found out in July when he was 17 that he was free. He was plowing in a field when a white man rode by and said, “You know, you’re free. You don’t have to plow like that.” Griffin told the mule, “You go your way, and I’ll go mine” and he and the mule went free. Griffin searched unsuccessfully for his parents for thirty years and later bought the Belk Estate Homestead in Ozan, (Hempstead County) Arkansas. He paid $11 for 160 acres of land.
  • Two sisters, Vashti and Savannah Belk, married two brothers, Joe ‘Man’ and Willie Suttles. Vashti and Joe wed in January 1910, while Savannah and Willie married in February 1910. The families lived together for several months until the children started coming. The children are “double first cousins.”
  • Andy and Rhoda’s daughter Hoppie and granddaughter Mattie (Hannah’s child) died as teenagers (15 and 16 respectively). One reason given is that they “got wet” during their periods.
  • Joe and Sarah Suttles came from South Carolina and were sold to Master Suttles in Ozan, Arkansas.
  • Ellen Suttles Draper’s mother remarried and had May Francis and Jimmy (both deceased)
  • Milton Green was digging on some white man’s property and found a pot of money. He covered it up and planned to return to collect it but when he got back the money was gone.
  • Vasti Belk Suttles got her daughter Hazel’s name froma hat in the Sears Roebuck Catalog. Rev. Paul Johnson named her oldest, Fanilla. She is the only one of her siblings with a middle name. Her youngest, Christiana was called that after Elder CI Bullocks. He was preaching and said “Pay me!” Christiana, about 2, was playing under a pew and repeated the words “Pay me!” Upon entering school in Clow, AR she took the name Irene.
  • Hester Suttles would hunt “like a man”.
  • Joe Suttles, Ellen’s father had two brothers, Dan and Toliber. All three were ministers.
  • Willie Suttles had a glass eye.
  • Vashti Belk Suttles loved to chew Juicy Fruit gum.
